A bettor profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader just before it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from confidential information of the event.

Sudden Shift in Predictions

Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the month's conclusion surged in the time leading up to former President Trump declared on the weekend that the president had been seized.

A single trader, which became a member in December and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32.5K.

It remains unclear. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Probability Spikes Before News Break

Platform data shows that users put the odds of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

But the market's assessment had climbed to 11% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the early hours of January 3rd, indicating a rapid movement in betting activity immediately prior to the official statement was made.

"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on inside information," said an industry expert.

Several of other traders also profited large payouts from predicting the capture.

Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges

Politicians are growing concerned.

Proposed legislation presented on Monday seeks to ban public officials from participating on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with users able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.

Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. However it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.

Insider trading is against the law in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting industry.

A company executive for a competing service said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
