EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
