During an first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an audacious start to his term.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The 34-year-old figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the public whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.

Defying advice to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my principles for concern of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.

A Sweeping Platform

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Free childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these initiatives may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Challenges

The new mayor also faces concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has moved to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly friendly.

The Core Tests of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering basic services: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and making sure smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
