Uche Fuels Dominant Crystal Palace Win at Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their first-ever European adventure, Crystal Palace are learning at a rapid pace. Without star figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the London club departed Dublin with a comfortable result that virtually secures them a spot in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
A further three points in their next fixture against Finnish KuPS should be enough to secure straight passage to the knockout stages, particularly after a prior stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Grasp the Moment
This match offered a platform for several Palace's lesser-used players to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second start since arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a clinical finish. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a another, scoring for the second game in succession.
A Shelbourne side that had concluded their domestic season were outmatched even for a largely second-string Palace outfit. The visitors were further weakened by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with knee problems.
Dominance Asserted from the Start
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A flowing passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close minutes later, fizzing a long-range shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the referee waved away the appeals.
The formerArsenal striker did not have wait long to find his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's shot had hit the post.
The home side were hanging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to escape a booking for two robust tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The match was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw key players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring with his first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot crash off both posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then blazed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect night for the visiting side.
